Fulda, historically in English called Fuld, is a town in Hesse, Germany; it is located on the river Fulda and is the administrative seat of the Fulda district. Fulda station is a transport hub and interchange point between local and long-distance traffic of the German railway network, and is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 2 station. The Old City Hall and the old university building and University Plaza are three highlights of the city. The University of Fulda (also: Alma mater Adolphiana), was founded in 1734 by Adolphus von Dalberg and existed until 1805. Most of the students and professors were Catholic. Under Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra Protestants were also admitted; from 1777, with the sole exception of the theological faculty, a Protestant could acquire a degree in any faculty of the university.
